It is amazing the difference in effort you will get from worksheet to worksheet. Granted the amount of effort may vary immensely from year to year depending on the group of students you have. However for the most part, when a worksheet is needed to help drill down a procedure, standard, or lesson, its effectiveness can and will vary. Therefore it is our job as the teacher to make sure that when we need to utilize a worksheet, we provide the students with one that is as inspiring as can be. Times are different these days. Kids are growing up in a world of microwaves, fast food chains, Nintendo, Wifi, iPads, along with a ton of other technical marvels. When I was growing up we didnt have home computers let alone PlayStation to entertain ourselves. Handheld camcorders were barely coming to the retail market by the time I was in 8th grade, but still a long ways away from the YouTube and Facebook arena we now see today. Times were extremely different back then and so was school.

Kindergarten ABC worksheets should have different activities to help children identify the various letters of the alphabet. The activities may involve very simple things like colouring, ticking, drawing a line to match items etc. Using attractive illustrations and cartoon characters would make it more fun for children. The activities should be graded, i.e initial activities should be very simple and easy (but should be fun with good pictures etc, so as to interest the child); later worksheets may involve a little bit more work. Care should be taken to give children worksheets that they are capable of doing. This involves understanding and monitoring the child continually, since the level of attainment of different children would often be quite different. The worksheet should challenge the child but not overwhelm her. If the worksheet is too easy or too repetitive, it may bore the child and she would not be happy. If the activity is too difficult it would frustrate her and she would not like to take up more sheets.

Today we all know that benefits of math are considerable. Math is not a subject one learns by reading the problems and solutions. American children have very little practice with multi-step problems, and very few opportunities to think their way in to and through problems that dont look like all the others. With a packed curriculum and the increased emphasis on testing, our children are taught tons of procedures - but procedures disconnected from when to use them, and why. Sustained thinking - the key ingredient to math success - is painfully absent in too many math classes.
